Buy a quality dial or digital caliper. Verniers are fine, but there is no reason to limit yourself and increase the chance of misreading, especially if you are new to reading them. Over time it becomes second nature, but having a nice dial or digital isn't something to shy away from. You can pick up a nice Mitutoyo Dial for $100 or less if you look around.
Those were the calipers I used for the first two years of my shop life and they are still accurate to this day. I would still be using them if I hadn't been given a 0-8' IP67 Mitutoyo by my shop. If you are not familiar with Vernier calipers, go to Amazon and search for Vernier caliper and many options will come up. Pay close attention to the reviews. I recommend you get straight Vernier calipers, not digital or dial, because they are less complex and there is less that can go wrong.
Larger calipers are more expensive so choose one just large enough to measure the range you need. Most calipers are reasonably accurate when new but to maintain that accuracy they must be handled, treated, and stored carefully. Mitutoyo is very good quality but might not be the best value for money depending on how accurate you need them to be. Choose a name brand if you plan to use them often, as they will hold up better. If there is a local company that sells and calibrates measuring equipment, they might have a used caliper that has recently been calibrated. That is where I got my first calipers. There is a lot online about using and maintaining Vernier calipers.
Good luck with your search!. Saying no one uses Vernier calipers anymore is like saying no one drives a vehicle with a manual transmission anymore, or no one stick welds anymore. While it's mostly true, it isn't 100% true.
I believe a learner's first set of calipers should be verniers so he can learn to use them well, and he will have them for backup when the battery on the digital fails or the dial skips a tooth. There is nothing wrong with the accuracy of verniers - the digitals are faster and easier to read as a trade off for increased cost and less reliability.
